Customer Reviews:
heavenly music
This is some of the best violin music I have ever heard. Itzhak Perlman is the best violinist of our time. Heavenly!

A classical violin concerto
This is a magnificent interpretation of both Mendelssohn’s violin corcerto and also of Bruch’s. The interpretation of Mendelsohn’s concerto bring out all of its lyricism and that of Bruch’s is superbly virtuoso. Great buy.

Good show!
I play violin, and I think the Mendelssohn violin Concerto is one of the best. But the bruch concerto, well, is quite disapointment. He is such a great violinist, why wouldn’t he make sure that he played the best he could? I don’t know. But it seems to me at least, that in some places, he plays with quite a lot of power puts his back into it, but in other places it lacks brileance. But don’t complain unless you can do better. But I highly recomend Miklos Szenthelyi’s recording Max Bruch Con, IT IS AMAZING!!!

    Customer Reviews:
    It’s all about Angela…
Angela Hewitt in her bid to out do Glenn Gould must be commanded for her bold undertaking even if one wonders about the motives. Playing Bach live is a very courageous endeavor.

In this well filmed but quite long DVD, Angela Hewitt is kindly condescending to teach us, common mortals, about Bach but mostly to make us understand why we would not be able to reach her pinnacle: at the top of the Bach mountain, there is only room for one and even Glenn would have to concede… Not once, he is mentioned! Considering that Bach’s playing in the XX century truly exploded with him, it is somewhat surprising in my opinion. Not that Gould’s playing should not be exempt of criticism, but his contribution to Bach music is invaluable, like it or not.

Of course the basics, the backgrounder about Baroque music style and Bach in particular is presented and this is good: the various editions, the ornementation, the parallel with string players, the differences between Harpsichord and modern piano -she really hates these harpsichordists doesn’t she?-. All this is fine.

But after 148 minutes filmed in the Fazioli factory, the equivalent of a surgery block clean manufacturing grounds compared to the Steinway digs for instance, one really wonders what they’ll take home and work on.

Did we learn about how to play Bach, the rules of articulations or did we learn about Ms. Hewitt own cooking and given her tone, how unlikely we would come close to having the imagination, taste, talent she possesses in order to approach this music.

She mentions Ottawa Canada, but one feels she is now safely back from the “colony” to the civilized motherland…

The problem is that Ms. Hewitt is unaware of some recent developments that have exposed rules of small speech like articulation and their reasons, their relations with the symbolism of Bach music (Teregulov 1993, Nosina 1991, 1993 re-issued in 2006).

Therefore she presents her own interpretation of rules -my father did this…- and often goes against the grain. For instance she explains that Bach’s markings are supposed to be taken as rules in a piece when they appear at one spot while in fact, his markings were signaling a particular character, even an exception to the known rules, those very rules known to Kappellmeisters and thus never written on keyboard scores but clearly indicated on orchestral scores or string scores. Dear Daniel Muller-Shott is obliging with an overdone Baroque sound inflating and deflating and his eyes betray the devotion to the great priestess of the cult…

So as a result Ms Hewitt often brushes over rules and talks more about her own figuring out what works for her than truly offering students regardless of their level, real, workable rules that universally enhance the polyphony in their playing.

Thus in her bid to become the Bach interpreter of our troubled time, Ms. Hewitt indeed in this DVD reveals herself to non musicians something her playing anyway does to musicians who know the rules.

It is well filmed although sometimes the reflection of the scripter can be seen on the gleaming Fazioli.

A curiosity but one to consume with moderation…

A modern Bach legend shares her insights
Hyperion produced this two-disc DVD set as part of Miss Hewitt’s 07/08 Bach World Tour (bachworldtour). It is shot on location at the Fazioli piano factory in Italy (Hewitt highly favors these pianos). Even if you are purely a listener, this nicely done production will take you to a new depth of discovery and appreciation into the legendary music of Bach and Angela Hewitt.

Disc 1 (148 min) is instructional with Hewitt demonstrating various techniques, strategies and advice in 7 chapters (see list below). I suppose it is something akin to her Bach master’s classes. She uses numerous musical motiff examples from the WTC and much of Bach’s keyboard repertoire to show what she means. These alone are endlessly fascinating to watch the pianist’s ease, fluidity and nuance. She often compares to how an amatuer would play it … and of course how the she would approach it. One is immediately impressed with Hewitt’s love and discipline with this music. She is also a great educator, weaving both technical detail and personal stories in the lessons. The camera work is quite good, showing at a slight angle from the right the keyboard work of both hands up close. Up this close, you can see just how strong her steel-spring-like fingers are for playing Bach like she does! Of course she makes it look effortlessly.

Disc 2 (62 minutes) is a live performance at the Fazioli factory auditorium - where of course she plays a Fazioli piano. These pianos are noted for their super-fast action, complex yet brilliant and clear harmonics and the addition of a special, forth pedal for enhanced dynamic shading. Of course she makes Bach sing and sound beautiful on it. The camera work again is good allowing one to see most of the action unhindered, although at times of sections of fast passagework (like in the chromatic fantasy/fugue) the camera is more on the pianist than the keyboard. The sound is rich and full as is her playing, making for an impressive concert.

A small missed opportunity perhaps was not getting a ‘virtual tour’ of how they make pianos at the Fazioli factory, whose instruments in various stages of assembly are in the background during the shoot. Side bar: for piano afficiantos, there is a marvelous little chapter about the Fazioli factory in the charming memoir, “The Piano Shop on the Left Bank” by Thad Carhart.

    Customer Reviews:
Magnificent ! Doesn’t get any better.
Brilliant, lively interpretations. Amazing tone. Crystal clear articulation of every note. Never boring. I own dozens of classical guitar CDs and have been a student of the instrument many years. I listen to these three CDs more than any others. These recordings (on CD 2) made me fall in love w Scarlatti, though I had heard his music played on guitar (very well) before.

If you like classical guitar at all, just buy it - you will love it.

    Illuminating
I’m a thoughtful and introspective person with a diverse background. Of all the old countries, Spain’s diverse background appealed to me. This music reflects that appeal.

    Essential recordings
Not much else really to say about this. It is a collection of brilliant interpretations and the guitar has the most amazing sound I’ve ever heard on a recording. You will find yourself almost spiritually bound to share this recording with any classical guitar playing friends and aficionados.

    Listening v. Watching
We used to play the original audio cassette version of this entrancing story to our baby daughter. Now we wanted to give the experience to our granddaughter. So we bought the DVD version, but it’s not the same. The audio was great to play for the baby after lights out, to go to sleep by, to fantasise to Beethoven’s glorious music.

Watching the story told in visual form is distracting and doees not achieve the same magic for the imagination.

We’re now going to see if can find the original audio cassette format! But one way or another the stories of composers in these series are a wonderful introduction for young children to the beauty of classical music.

    Buy the VHS
I am a public school elementary music teacher and I bought this dvd because it really is a great educational tool. I specifically bought the DVD so that it would be easy to cue for classes. However, HUGE PROBLEM–NO DVD CHAPTERS. If you are going to be cueing the movie for a class, buy the VHS. There is no way short of manually fast forwarding to get to your spot. What a pain. On the upside, the story is fluid and engaging and the length is perfect for a public school setting.

    excellent product
I first saw this movie on TV. It is an excellent movie to show to my music students and a real insight into the composer’s life. The actors enchant us with a superb performance. Highly recommended.

    Simple Music
This is music for babies, or for children, the people at Baby Einstein understand that little ears have trouble discerning multiple sounds. If you had wanted a classical music CD those are already available. But your baby needs a simple CD with only 1 or 2 instruments. It’s not about whether YOU like the CD, but whether your child likes it.

Must Have for Baby Einstein Fans
This CD is a must-have for our little Baby Einstein fans! My son loves this CD! From the moment when I played it the first time, a few months ago, he still loves to dance to this. I find it’s great to put on while he’s playing with his toys, instead of turning on a DVD or the TV, and he’ll play much longer and happier.

    Very nice!
I put all my baby’s toys on the floor and turn on the cd player and she gets veeery excited with this music! Excellent! Get the “Traveling with the Baby” as well cause it’s very soothing in the car.

    Placido Domingo - Perhaps Love

This CD contains some very beautiful romantic songs. John Denver is our great loss and Domingo is our great talent. Such charisma and tenderness. You can almost feel him in your presence. I would recommend it 100%.

Perhaps Placido Domingo with John Denver
I am absolutely smitten with other Placido Domingo music but this was a bit disappointing.

    This is a great Cd.
This is a great Cd. I used to think that this kind of music was not fit for my taste, but when I listened to this Cd, I discovered there was more to music than just scary movie scores. The songs on this Cd are pleasant to listen to. Highly recommended.

If you’re wondering why I’m giving this five stars, it’s because this music made me change my mind about what music is.

    Exactly As Promised
This is exactly what it says….a wonderful collection of great traditional Hymns sung by a traditional church choir. No disappointments. Excellent stuff.

    Solid
The hymns chosen aren’t all the best, meaning it slows down a few times in the long runtime of the CD, but the quality and selection overall are good — I particularly like the closing track, “The Holy City.” If you’re looking for a decent collection of hymns done in the traditional style (organ and choir with some vocal solos), this is a fine choice.

a voice teacher and early music fan
A SOUL-SATISFYING AND JOYFUL LISTENING EXPERIENCE!

Come on now; let’s judge this album on its own merits. Firstly, the Statler Brothers( retired now) have been OUTSTANDING country music performers; far from third-rate!!! I am not a country music fan, but I do know GOOD singing when I hear it!!!!!! Their recommendation of this disc is a compliment to the producers of it, and for the choirs on it. Does it really matter whether they are English, American or from Upper Slobbovia???????

This is an excellent representation of hymns in general; and it is good to hear that some of the more traditional hymns are alive and well. There is no one that performs them better than the British choirs!!!Their hymn tradition goes back for centuries, and many of the hymns we hear today in this country have a direct relationship to that heritage.

A quote from John Rutter (an Americanized Englishman, and director of the Cambridge Singers, from his own album “Sing,ye Heavens”) : “Hymnody is forever changing……the emergence of pop and folk-influenced worship songs and choruses, whose worth time will tell…..Perhaps it is time to reflect on the immense riches of hymnody built up over so many centuries, and to be reminded of them at a time when they are at risk of neglect.”

Therefore, those of you who will, listen to this album with joy and not with the idea of finding something wrong, because you won’t be successful.
